Most growers know potassium humate as a soil amendment, but one of the fastest-acting ways to use it is through the leaf. A properly prepared potassium humate foliar spray can deliver humic substances and potassium directly to the photosynthetic factory of the plant, often showing visible greening and vigor within 5 to 7 days. Based on field trials we have supported across orchards, vineyards, and vegetable farms in China, North Africa, and Latin America, foliar application is the most underestimated technique in the humate toolkit — and the one most often done wrong.

This guide explains how to mix, tank-blend, and time potassium humate foliar sprays for fruit and vegetable crops, with practical rates and quality checkpoints drawn from our own production and customer field data.

Why Spray Potassium Humate on Leaves?

Humic substances act as biostimulants at very low concentrations. When applied as a foliar spray, potassium humate:

  • Stimulates leaf cell membrane permeability, improving uptake of co-applied nutrients such as nitrogen, zinc, iron, and boron;
  • Increases chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate, with field-measured chlorophyll SPAD readings commonly 8–15% higher ten days after application;
  • Supplies readily available potassium (K₂O ≥ 10%) that supports sugar accumulation and fruit sizing during enlargement stages;
  • Helps crops recover faster from heat, cold, and hail stress by supporting antioxidant enzyme activity;
  • Improves fruit set and retention when sprayed before and after flowering on stone fruit, grape, tomato, and pepper.

Choosing the Right Grade: Solubility Decides Everything

Foliar spraying is the most demanding use of potassium humate. Only a fully water-soluble, centrifugation- or spray-dried granular powder should go into a foliar tank. Our factory specification for foliar-grade material: 99%+ water solubility (no residue on a 200-mesh screen), haemoglobin (KOH-extraction) humic acid content of 50–60%, K₂O at least 10%, pH of a 1% solution between 8 and 10, and heavy metals tested within international limits by SGS before each batch ships.

Avoid soil-grade or raw Leonardite powders in foliar tanks. In our plant we make this distinction on the production line itself: foliar-grade material is micronized and filtered through multiple stages — anything meant for sprayers should never risk plugging a 0.3 mm nozzle.

Recommended Dilution Rates for Fruit and Vegetable Crops

From distributor trial data and grower feedback we have collected over several seasons, these working ranges are reliable for soluble potash humate (55–60% HA, 10–12% K₂O):

  • Vegetables (tomato, cucumber, pepper, leafy greens): 300–500 g per hectare per application, diluted for 300–500 L spray volume, i.e., roughly 0.05–0.1% solution (1:1,000 to 1:2,000);
  • Tree fruit (apple, citrus, peach, cherry, mango): 0.05–0.1% solution, 800–1,000 L water per hectare for mature canopies;
  • Grapes and berries: 0.03–0.06% — start low, humates strongly enhance nutrient uptake, and concentrated solutions on young berries can cause russeting;
  • Greenhouse crops under irrigation: 200–300 g per 1,000 m² in the boom sprayer.

A useful rule we give partners: more is not better with humates. At the wrong concentration, high-molecular-weight humic fractions can temporarily slow growth. Begin with 0.05% and adjust with experience.

Tank Mixes: What Potassium Humate Works Well With

Potassium humate is mildly alkaline and an excellent tank partner for many products:

  • Urea and NPK liquid fertilizers: pairing 3–5% urea with 0.05% humate during grain or fruit fill consistently improves leaf retention and dry-matter gain;
  • Chelated micronutrients (Fe-EDTA, Zn, Mn, B): humates act as natural chelation extenders, keeping micronutrients available on the leaf surface longer;
  • Most common fungicides and insecticides: jar-test first, but humate usually improves spread and deposit evenness;
  • Seaweed extract and amino acid fertilizers: a classic biostimulant combination for stress recovery sprays.

What to avoid: strong acidic products, calcium nitrate and other high-calcium solutions (calcium can salt out humic acids as insoluble humates and clog filters), and copper hydroxide fixes at high rates. Always perform a jar test at final concentration before filling the tank.

Timing and Technique

  • Spray early morning or late afternoon, below 28°C, with humidity above 60% — humate uptake happens through open stomata;
  • For flowering crops, the key passes are: pre-bloom, petal fall, and twice during fruit enlargement at 10–14 day intervals;
  • Cover the underside of leaves where absorption is fastest; fine droplets (150–250 µm) beat heavy drenching;
  • Do not apply within 4 hours of expected rain;
  • Add a non-ionic surfactant at label rate when spraying high-coverage crops such as grape or tomato.

Results We Track in the Field

In a citrus block program our customers ran with four foliar passes at 0.06%, fruit brix increased by an average of 0.8 points and cracking dropped noticeably after enlargement-stage sprays. In greenhouse tomato, three applications of 0.05% humate plus 3% urea starting at first flower cluster raised marketable yield by 6–9% versus the urea-only check plot. Results vary with cultivar, climate, and baseline fertility — we always recommend starting with one block and comparing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Can I mix potassium humate with pesticides in the same foliar spray tank?

Yes, in most cases. Potassium humate (pH 8–10 as a 1% solution) is compatible with many fungicides, insecticides, and foliar fertilizers, and it often improves deposit evenness. Do a jar test at final concentration first, and avoid mixing with strongly acidic products, calcium nitrate, or high-rate copper products, which can precipitate humic acids.

Q2: What concentration of potassium humate is safe for a foliar spray on vegetables and fruits?

Use fully water-soluble granular grade at 0.03–0.1% (about 300–500 g per hectare in 300–1,000 L water, depending on crop canopy). Sensitive berries and young seedlings should start at the low end. Higher doses don't speed results — excess humate can temporarily inhibit growth.

Q3: Why does my potassium humate leave residue in the sprayer tank?

That usually means a soil- or industrial-grade product with insoluble Leonardite fines. Foliar applications require 99%+ cold-water-soluble material that passes a 200-mesh screen test with no grit. Reputable producers control this by centrifugation and fine filtration on the production line; ask your supplier for a solubility test report and SGS/third-party heavy-metal analysis before buying foliar grades.

About Us
