  • Maize and wheat (cereals): 0.5-1.0 g of water soluble potassium humate per litre of water, soak 8-12 hours at a 1:1 seed-to-water ratio by weight, shade-dry back to <=14% moisture before treating or planting.
  • Puddled rice and nursery trays: 0.8-1.0 g/L for 24-48 hours at 30-32 deg C. Rice is tolerant, and the longer soak helps breaking dormancy in freshly harvested seed.
  • Vegetables (tomato, pepper, cucumber, melon, brassicas): 0.25-0.5 g/L for only 4-6 hours. Small-seeded crops are far more sensitive - in one grower comparison, 2 g/L on lettuce set germination back several points instead of helping it.
  • Legumes (soybean, peanut, faba bean): 0.5 g/L for 2-4 hours maximum. Legumes imbibe violently; over-soaking leaches sugars and invites Rhizobium loss on the inoculant.
  • Sunflower, sorghum, beet: 1.0 g/L for 10-12 hours works well on hard-coated, slow-emerging lots.

In favourable trials the practical payoffs we normally quote are: germination up roughly 5-12 percentage points versus untreated checks, first emergence one to two days earlier, seminal root length 15-30% longer, and a visibly more uniform stand under cold or crusted conditions. Those are directional numbers, not guarantees - response is strongest when the seedbed is cold, dry, saline, compacted from traffic, or crusted, and weakest in warm, ideally moist soil where the seed already has no constraint.

Dry Coating, Pelleting, and Binder Solutions

Commercial seed treaters usually prefer a coating route because it removes the drying step. Two practices work reliably:

  • Use a 3-5% w/v solution of flake potassium humate (200 mesh, fully water-soluble grade) as the liquid carrier for the polymer binder instead of plain water.
  • On pellet products, 200-500 g of humate per 100 kg of finished seed sits in the range most operations can run without making the pellet sticky or dusty.

Keep the slurry pH between about 6.5 and 8.0. Humic acid salts floc and drop out of solution in acidic carriers, and a precipitated humate on a seed coat is a wasted product plus a clogged equipment risk. If a fungicide or insecticide is being applied in the same pass, jar-test it with the humate solution first, add the humate to the water before any other product, and never blend with a strongly acidic suspension or a calcium-rich concentrate.

In-Furrow and Starter Alternatives for Farms Without a Treater

A family farm does not need a drum treater to benefit from early humate exposure. Three practical placements:

  • Seed-line injection: 3-5 kg/ha of soluble granular potassium humate dissolved in the starter tank, placed with the seed but keep total salt near the row modest.
  • Pre-plant drench: 1-2 g/L applied to the seedbed within 24 hours of planting, then incorporated 5-10 cm deep so the band sits where the radicle will reach it.
  • Transplant and plug dip: 2-4 g/L for a 5-10 minute root dip in seedling trays beats a drench, because it puts the solution directly against the existing root mat and shortens transplant check.
